Tags Colossus of Rhodes evergreen Greek facts Greek history Greek mythology seven wonders of ancient world. Over this they used brass plates to create the skin and outer structure of Helios.

Some historians believe that Helios was built with one foot on either side of the harbour. Others have discounted this theory and believe that he stood in a more Greek Pose. If the statue had been built with Helios' legs straddling the harbour, the harbour would have had to be closed for the 12 years of construction. It would also have blocked the harbour when it fell.

Charles of Lindos was the architect of the Colossus of Rhodes. His teacher was Lysippus, a sculptor who had previously created a 60 foot tall statue of Zeus. Construction began in B. Internal supports were made of stone pillars with iron beams. Iron and bronze from Greek swords left behind from a previous war were melted and forged.

The bronze was cast into thin plating and iron into rods and beams. Once the swords were used up, the Rhodians turned to Cypriot copper chips and melted them with iron. The statue was a male figure, naked but with a crown of solar rays on his head, perhaps holding a torch. It stood on a marble pedestal.

The desire to build the statue was twofold — to please Helios, the protector of Rhodes, and increase the prestige of the island with a titanic statue following their victory in the year long siege by Macedonian invaders.

And in essence, the Colossus was made of stone with a thin covering of bronze, polished so the sun made it shine bright.
