I could have done without the whole poontang sideline. It would have been better if the film focused more on how his vision quest affected him at school. The last thing that I'd do would be to talk about what this movie means. I don't look for life lessons in movies. Vision Quest is just plain fun. I also don't really look to movies for inspiration but if I did Vision Quest would be a good place to start.
There is nothing new or original in this story but I would rate it as one of the top sports movies of all time. Rocky sucked in comparison Rocky sucks compared to anything. It has aged very well. Journey was the worst band in the freaking world. Foreigner was a close second.
I hated all the music in the film but in this context it's cool. In so many films and TV they have 30 year olds in these roles. Well done! Everyone knows everything about the team and the gym is packed for matches. I doubt this is the case anywhere, but it should be. Homesick to your stomach inspectors71 24 February So I'm pulling into the parking lot of Spokane Falls Community College to take a Western Civ test in the fall of and somebody tells me that if I get picked, I can get fifty bucks for driving my car past the camera being used to film a parking lot scene from a movie about a high school wrestler.
I needed the grade more than the cash so I said, "Nah. Vision Quest is more of a home movie than a feature film for me. Yet, if you're from Spokane or anywhere in the Palouse or have gone to a community college in the area or have attended Rogers or North Central or just like the dippy, square little town, it's enough make you want to hop a flight and go home.
Maybe that's all a movie needs to be. Bob 28 October While I bought the soundtrack to 'Vision Quest' while the movie was still new, I didn't bother to see the movie until recently.
While a great soundtrack and a braless Linda Fiorentino was quite appealing, the 'high school wrestler' plot didn't interest me at all. It's free. We were glad we did. Sure, Modine was sappy, but so was his character, Loudan Swain. Loudan's a goofy kid who just turned He's also smart and athletic and decent. He's a wrestler and he plans to beat the best high school wrestler in the state. Loudan wants this not for glory or awards; he just believes he can do it and makes a superhuman effort to lose the weight required to compete in the champ's weight class.
His buddy, Kuch, who fancies himself an American Indian, observes Loudan is making a 'vision quest' for self discovery. During Loudan's journey and 'rite of passage to manhood' he meets Carla, a street smart, sexy girl three years his senior. Loudan falls for Carla and now has two dreams, to fight the champ and to win Carla. The movie has a lot to say about life and how dedication leads to genius.
The language is rough, but quite natural. Linda Fiorentino has the movies funniest line, which refers to the 'Holland Tunnel', but J. Quinn, who plays Modene's chef friend, has the most poetic monologue, regarding Pele and soccer.
Even though things don't work out exactly as Loudan expected, he's uplifted and exhilarated and you will be, too. While the songs were not written for the movie except, probably the Oscar worthy 'Crazy for You' , they work extremely well.
I give it a '7'. This is a decently done flick that deals with growing up as a teenager. Matthew Modine is excellent as Louden Swayne, a high school wrestler. He's just turned 18 and hasn't "done anything yet" and thinks that it's time to make a splash. He decides to take on the toughest guy in the state Shute in wrestling. Problem is, he's 2 weight classes too heavy, so he begins to lose weight rapidly.
Just about this time, a slightly older girl Linda Fiorentino gets stranded in town and ends up staying with Louden and his dad for a while. Naturally, Louden falls hard for this beauty hey, so did I!
I've read some comments that Fiorentino is a little masculine in this film, but I disagree. Modine is perfect in this role and acts just like a dumb, love-struck, silly teenage boy would act in that situation including a humorous scene where she catches him sniffing her panties.
I like this flick pretty well - it's entertaining and fun to watch. Isn't that what the whole industry is about? Maniac-9 29 January Matthew Modine plays Louden Swain a high school wrestler who tries to shed 23 pounds in a dangerously short time so that he can challenged the lb. He goes on a Vision Quest to accomplish something truly meaningful which beating Shute who's an undefeated 3 time state champion would accomplish. Meanwhile his dad takes in a boarder from New Jersey who's making her way across country on her way to California named Carla.
Even though Carla is a few years older then Louden starts to fall for Carla which makes him start to lose his focus on his wrestling. The drastic amount of weight cutting he's doing leads Louden to start to develop nosebleeds and fainting.
If you're an athlete in any sport this is a good movie to help motivate you to accomplish whatever goals you want to do in your chosen sport. The movie is about a horny teen who's vision quest, which pretty much only concerns wrestling heavyweight Shoop as a way to "make his mark" when he enters manhood he's turning You still get a good story and, eighties fans are sure to enjoy the movie.
If they did ever remake this movie, it is the one case in which they should consider sticking to the novel. Madonna briefly appears as a club singer to perform 'Crazy for You,' and 'Gambler,' both of which are on the soundtrack. If you haven't seen this movie crickey what are you waiting for. One of the best coming of age movies ever made.
Great soundtrack to a great movie. One of my very favorites Forgettable coming-of-age tripe, one of the few teen films of the time to go for an R-rating.
Perhaps if I had hit the mat back in high school I would've been moved. Lanky, goofy Modine jogs at all hours, gets more non-contact nosebleeds than an upper-deck ticket buyer, and starves himself to victory in this wrestling allegory. A rough and tumble chick shows up in his neighborhood, socks a used car dealer in the face, and is in turn taken into Modine's home by his father.
Despite her "the world can go eff itself" exterior, she of course is a dedicated artist who listens to classical music. She wears no make-up, no form-fitting clothes, and shows nary an interest in Modine. Naturally, he "falls" in love with her. The rest of the film is dedicated to various training sequences, backed up by a good soundtrack, intermixed with expected machismo you'd find in a high school sports movie. Embarrassingly though, the flick has become horribly dated in terms of its, ahem Yes, the full contact aspects of the sport are customary, but also off-hand remarks involving guy-on-guy admiration, and Modine's adversary telling him "I'll give you something to suck!
Let him put his damn tidy-whities back on!! One of the flaws is having Modine's worst enemy actually part of his team, and the rival school's bad-ass hardly even featured. There's not even a standard 80s show of solidarity by the two later in the film. They also throw in a few howlers dealing with Modine's virginity being the measure of a man, and a completely needless and laughable analysis on the female "clitter-iss".
Zuniga's jubilation at Modine's school article!! It all leads to your standard battle royale heart-stopper where you-know-who emerges victorious, complete with a freeze-frame voice-over on the meaning of life. Not exactly the end of "The Karate Kid". I dunno, the entire film just had no impact anywhere. Insignifigantly told and laid out, with Modine's hero too non-descript and naive.
A wholly unrecognizable Fiorentino drags things down as well with her totally charmless troubled-girl-with-heart act. Ronny Cox is always reliable as the understanding dad, with James Gammon only glimsped long enough to slap his kid "Sixteen Candles" Matt Dillon look-a-like Schoeffling in the face a few times in a druken stupor and tell him he's not a man. Well, at least there's the above mentioned soundtrack, although Madonna's "Crazy for You" is beaten to death song is featured no fewer than four times.
And Modine and Zuniga would appear together again in a far better campus film called "Gross Anatomy" four years later. Seek that out instead. It's that guy from The Thing, and Joker! This movie is fairly notorious. I'm not sure if the presumed subtexts are present, though I tend to think they are. But that does not a good movie make. The problem is wrestling is freaking boring, and watching people training for wrestling is ten times more boring.
Joker seems to take five hours of this two hour movie jumping in the sack with Dianna from V. Swain falls in love with her and she helps him stay focused and prevents him from losing sight of his goals.
All he needed was a lucky break. Then one day she moved in. Did you know Edit. Trivia This was Linda Fiorentino 's very first audition straight out of drama school.
She got the part, and it was her feature film debut. Goofs In the match between Loudon and Shute, the referee clearly says "no takedown" as they go out of bounds. Yet, when he brings them back to the line, Loudon takes the "down" position and the score is in Shute's favor, indicating a takedown has been awarded. Quotes Louden Swain : You never took a night off to see me wrestle before. Courtesy of Columbia Records. User reviews 80 Review.
Top review. Don't be afraid to chase your dreams. Any time I need to get psyched up this is the movie I think about.
I learned watching it back in the 80's that if you have a dream you have to go after it because nobody is going to give it to you. It doesn't matter if you are a wrestler, a financial analyst, an astronaut or a bartender everybody has a dream. Louden set a goal, had a plan and went after what he wanted, that's what we all need to do. This movie has had a great effect on my life. I guess everybody has their own motivational tools and cheesy or not this is one of mine.
From the peg board climbing scene to the Pele description scene to the warm up scene playing out to "Lunatic Fringe" before his match with Shute this movie, in my opinion is an inspirational masterpiece. I really wish they would re-release the soundtrack because I can't find it anywhere.
